The online car parts market is competitive and profitable, and eBay is at the center of it. According to eBay statistics, three parts or accessories sell on eBay Motors in the US every second, and its Parts & Accessories category turns over more than $10 billion a year. One in three eBay shoppers worldwide buys from this category. With traffic like that, it’s easy to see why merchants rate eBay among the best places to sell car parts.

Breaking into this market starts with one question: what car parts sell the most on eBay? This article covers the top-selling categories and what drives demand for them. You’ll discover the tools and strategies that help you list, price, and manage car parts on eBay at scale.

What Drives Demand for Car Parts

As you consider which parts to stock for eBay, remember that a part that sells out in one market can go stale in another. Take a look at the list of factors that make the difference:

  • Marketplace – the same part can be a success on eBay Motors US and sit untouched on eBay UK.
  • Season – parts like heater cores or AC compressors become more popular at opposite ends of the year.
  • Car models in your region – cars on the local roads affect which parts people search for.
  • Condition – new, remanufactured, and used parts attract different buyers and prices.
  • Price and shipping – buyers compare both closely, and either can lose you the sale.
  • Fitment accuracy – parts with wrong or missing compatibility data may not appear in search.

You can check live demand for parts using eBay’s seller research tools. They show what items buyers are searching for and what has been recently sold, which helps you see real interest before you commit to a category.

Still, some auto parts stay in demand no matter the model or season. If you’re just starting out, build your inventory around these categories:

  • Engine components: Parts like engines, cylinder heads, intake manifolds, fuel injectors, catalytic converters, and EGR system components.
  • Exterior body parts or accessories: Items like bumpers, fenders, wiper blades, hoods, doors, and mirrors.
  • Suspension and steering components: Parts such as control arms, ball joints, tie rods, and power steering pumps.
  • Electrical components: Items like alternators, starters, ignition coils, batteries, GPS systems, car battery chargers, and fuel pumps.
  • Performance parts: Aftermarket parts such as exhaust systems, air intakes, turbochargers, and suspension upgrades.
  • Interior components: Parts like car seats, airbags, dashboards, navigation systems, floor mats, air conditioning, and infotainment units.
  • Wheels and tires: Rims, tires, and wheel accessories are popular items.
  • Braking system parts: Components such as brake pads, rotors (brake discs), calipers, and brake master cylinders.
  • Cooling system parts: Radiators, water pumps, filters, thermostat assemblies, compressors, and cooling fans.
  • Transmission and drivetrain components: Transmission assemblies, clutch kits, drive shafts, and differential units.

Exterior accessories, lighting, wheels, and tires sell the most on eBay. But even slower categories can sell steadily, since a niche part with few sellers often has less competition than a crowded bestseller. eBay is also one of the strongest platforms for vintage and classic car parts. The reason for that is buyers struggle to find fitment elsewhere and are ready to pay for the right match.

Tips for Selling Car Parts on eBay

There’s advice that applies to selling anything: take sharp photos, write clear descriptions, answer buyers fast. It’s all true and obvious, so we’ll focus on the tips that you can use specifically for your car parts listings.

Add complete fitment data to every listing

This is the most important step for parts. A listing without compatibility data won’t show up when buyers filter listings by their vehicle. Fill in the year, make, model, trim, and engine for every vehicle the part fits. eBay’s Parts Compatibility feature helps with this and lets you attach a list of compatible vehicles to each listing. We’ll cover how it works later in the article.

Use exact part numbers and identifiers

Add the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) number, aftermarket number (MPN), brand, and interchange numbers to your eBay item specifics. Buyers who know their part search by these numbers, and eBay uses them to match your listing to its compatibility catalog.

If the numbers are incomplete or incorrect, your listings can mislead buyers or even break eBay’s rules, especially if you’re selling aftermarket parts. We’ll break it down in a separate section below.

Describe condition honestly, especially for used parts

“Used” on eBay Motors covers everything from a lightly worn alternator to a cracked housing, so the label alone tells the buyer nothing. State the mileage, the wear, and all missing bolts or brackets. Vague condition notes are often the top trigger for “not as described” returns.

Use AI to draft listings, but check the details

eBay’s Magical Listing tool can generate a title, category, and item specifics from a single product photo, which saves you time on listing creation. However, the tool identifies parts from the image alone, so it can mislabel a part or miss the exact variant, and it won’t build your fitment data.

You can treat the generated details as a first draft. Let the tool fill the basics, then correct the part information and add compatibility yourself or through a third-party tool.

Bundle parts that get bought together

Buyers replacing one part often need its companions, for example, brake pads with rotors, a water pump with a timing belt, filters with the oil. If you list those parts as a kit, you’ll raise the order value, and the buyers won’t have to search across separate listings.

Check other bundle listings to see what sells together. Then, price the bundle slightly under the sum of its parts so the deal is obvious.

Set competitive prices

Parts buyers open several identical listings in tabs and sort by total cost. Even a $1-2 difference decides the sale. Before you list, check completed eBay listings for the same part you want to sell. That shows you what buyers paid for the part, so you can match the price or undercut it.

Keep shipping low, or make it free

eBay ranks and displays listings by total cost, so item price plus shipping is what the buyer actually compares. A low item price with high shipping will certainly lose to a competitor that ships free. Where your margin allows, add shipping into the price of your parts and offer free delivery.

Ship parts so they survive the trip

A fender or bumper shipped in a thin box may arrive creased, which a buyer is likely to return. You’ll have to pay for return shipping, plus it affects your eBay seller account ratings. To avoid it, match packaging to the part you’re shipping: rigid boxes for panels, padding around machined surfaces, fluids drained and sealed.

Also, make sure to set realistic handling times, since many parts buyers have a car off the road waiting.

How eBay Parts Compatibility Helps Sell Car Parts

Parts Compatibility (also called fitment) is the feature that connects your part to the buyers who need it.

With its help, you can attach a list of compatible vehicles to a listing, so your part shows up when a buyer filters by their exact year, make, model, trim, and engine. You can add up to 3,000 vehicle combinations to a single part, depending on the category. As a result, buyers find your listing faster, ask fewer questions, and trust that the part will fit. eBay’s Parts Sales Hub highlights sellers reporting sales increases of up to 40% once fitment details are in place.

The only issue is scale. eBay uses a standardized vehicle database, so you can’t just type “Ford Focus 2018”. Each part has to be matched to eBay’s specific vehicle IDs (ePIDs/kTypes). Do that by hand across thousands of SKUs, one listing at a time, and it becomes a full-time job.

There’s a more flexible and automated way to handle the fitment data. M2E Cloud links your e-commerce platform (Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, and more) to eBay Motors and the other eBay marketplaces that support auto parts. What it does is not just listing and syncing your product and order data. The app helps provide and manage the compatibility details for your car parts listings on eBay:

  • Assign ePIDs/kTypes to many listings at once, instead of editing one part at a time.
  • Find compatible vehicles fast with filters by make, year, type, or ePID/kType, instead of going through eBay’s catalog.
  • Copy a full fitment list from any existing listing to other items using Duplicate Fitment by eBay item ID, so you create a vehicle list once and reuse it.
  • Cover every vehicle a part fits in one listing – collect models across brands and years, then apply them together.
  • Manage compatibility data in bulk via CSV, upload or edit fitment across your whole catalog through export/import.
  • Auto-fill the item specifics eBay requires by mapping your store categories and attributes to eBay ones, so parts list complete and appear in the right filtered searches.

With M2E Cloud, you list your car parts with less manual work, and in the format that eBay’s search favors. Check the setup steps in M2E Cloud’s guide to adding Parts Compatibility information.

Genuine Parts vs Aftermarket Parts: How to List Them

eBay lets you sell both genuine and aftermarket parts, and they often appear in the same eBay Motors categories. What separates them is how you fill in the listing fields.

Here’s the list of fields you need to complete and how it differs for genuine versus aftermarket parts:

  • Brand – for a genuine part, use the vehicle manufacturer (BMW, Ford, Volkswagen). For an aftermarket part, use the actual maker (Bosch, Brembo, Febi, Dorman), never the vehicle brand. If there’s no manufacturer, use “Unbranded.” This way, a part made by Dorman lists Dorman as the brand, not Ford.
  • MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) – the number assigned by whoever actually made the part.
  • OE/OEM Part Number – the number of the original part that an aftermarket product replaces. This works as a reference only; adding it doesn’t make the part original.
  • Interchange Part Number – alternative or cross-reference numbers from other makers for interchangeable parts.

For example, a genuine pad and its aftermarket equivalent are listed differently:

  • Genuine: Brand Volkswagen, MPN 5Q0698151, OE/OEM 5Q0698151. Title “Genuine Volkswagen Front Brake Pads 5Q0698151”
  • Aftermarket: Brand Brembo, MPN P85020, OE/OEM 5Q0698151. Title “Brembo Front Brake Pads P85020 Fits Volkswagen Golf”

As you can see, the listing for the aftermarket part doesn’t mention “Genuine Volkswagen” or “OEM Volkswagen,” because that would suggest Volkswagen made the part. To reference the vehicle instead, use “fits,” “for,” or “compatible with” before the brand name.

One more thing: fitment is separate from origin. Genuine and aftermarket parts can share the exact same list of compatible vehicles, so the compatibility list shows what a part fits, not whether it’s original.

eBay doesn’t verify every part automatically, so accuracy is on the seller. But if a listing looks like it’s passing an aftermarket part off as original, eBay can ask for proof of authenticity and remove it.

Costs & Fees of Selling Car Parts on eBay

eBay doesn’t charge a flat commission rate for car parts sales. The amount you pay depends mostly on which parts you sell and how you do it. If you’re a Business seller on eBay Motors and other eBay sites, three main charges will apply:

  • Final value fees – percentage taken on each sale. It’s calculated on the total amount, including item price, shipping, and applicable taxes. In some regions, a fixed per-order fee also applies.
  • Store subscription – fixed monthly fee. Although a paid eBay Store isn’t required, it lowers your other fees and raises your free listing allowance. Store subscription usually pays off if you have a large catalog.
  • Insertion fees – small per-listing charge that applies once you exceed your monthly free listings. Your Store tier sets how many listings you get free. Without a Store, the free listing allowance is smaller.

Our eBay fees breakdown walks you through Store tiers, insertion fees, and final value fees region by region.

The fee math works a little differently for parts sellers on eBay. Automotive fees vary by category and price, so a brake pad and a full exhaust system won’t have the same percentage. High-ticket parts like turbos or alloy wheels can carry substantial final value fees, so take them into account before you price the items. Your total also changes with the marketplace, listing format, and optional upgrades or promoted listings.

Summary

The parts that sell on eBay Motors are the ones buyers can find. That means taking the time to fill in fitment details and item specifics, setting prices that beat similar listings, and thinking through how you’ll ship each part.

It’s a lot to manage by hand once your catalog grows. Thankfully, M2E can automate the routine side – bulk fitment, category mapping, and inventory and order sync with your e-commerce platform. That automation leaves you free to do what actually grows the business: finding the parts worth selling and attracting more buyers.
